NLC President, Joe Ajaero, brutalised, right eye completely shut – union says
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised the alarm that its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, has was thoroughly brutalized with one of his eyes completely shut.
The NLC head of information, Benson Upah, added that Ajaero has been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri where he being treated after armed security operatives whisked him away from scene of a protest.
The update from Upah reads: “Contact has been made with Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero this evening around 15:30 hours at the Police Hospital in Owerri from where he was taken to Federal Medical Centre, Owerri where he is receiving medical attention.
“Thoroughly brutalized, his right eye at the time of contact was completely shut. Ajaero was beaten up blindfolded and taken to an unknown destination where more brutalisation took place, sometimes with bottles. His phones, money, and other personal effects were taken off him and have not been returned to him.”
Executive Director of Rule of Law, Advocacy and Accountability Centre (RULAAC), Okechukwu Nwanguma earlier confirmed the manhandling of Ajaero by police operatives.
He said: “I’m told that the chief security aid to Governor Hope Uzodinma, known as Chinasa Nwaneri who commands the Ebubeagu ‘Security outfit,’ led police officers to arrest Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labor Congress NLC, brutalized him, tore his clothes and have taken him to the dreaded Tiger Base which is the police unit that implements the terror agenda of the government in Imo State.”
