Micheal Taiwo Akinkunmi, a retired government civil servant and the well-known creator of the Nigerian flag, was declared dead on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. PoliticsNow offers some intriguing details regarding the late flag designer.

1. On May 10, 1936, Taiwo Akinkunmi was born.

2. Although Akinkunmi was born in Ibadan and has spent the majority of his life there, he is from Abeokuta, Ogun State.

3. He presented his design for the proposed national flag while still a student at Norwood Technical College in London.

4. His creation was selected as Nigeria’s National Flag in 1958.

5. Akinkunmi first painted a sun over the green/white/green, but he later removed it.

6. He received a 100-pound cash award for taking first place in the competition.

7. He received a presidential award from the federal government in 2010.

8. On September 29, 2014, at the Conference Centre Abuja, he received the distinctions of Officer of the Order of Federal Republic (OFR) and honorary Life Presidential Advisor.
