Rights Organization, Amnesty International, has asserted that efforts by the relevant authorities to tame insecurity are not working.
Making this assertion in the wake of the recent abduction of students of Federal University Gasau in Zamfara State, the organization lamented that the frequency of attacks on Nigerian schools was a testament to how unsafe schools in the country have become.
According to the organization, reports of cases of abduction have led to the closure of about 600 schools in the northern region.
“Last week, dozens of mostly female students of Federal University Gusau Zamfara state were abducted by gunmen. Those abducted are in serious risk of being harmed. The frequency of these attacks shows just how unsafe schools have become, particularly in northern Nigeria, while lack of justice has only emboldened the suspected perpetrators,” the statement partly read.
“Between December 2020 and March 2021, there have been at least five reported cases of abductions in northern Nigeria. The threat of further attacks led to the closure of about 600 schools in the region. Whatever authorities are doing to tame this tide, it is not working,” it added.
PoliticsNow had earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu had directed security agencies to rescue the remaining female students of the Federal University Gusau, Zamfara State, that are still in custody of their abductors.
The President condemned the abhorrent act of kidnapping and said that there is no moral basis for such a horrible conduct against innocent victims whose only “offence” was to pursue a high standard of education.
The president further promised the families of the kidnapped students that nothing will be spared to ensure their safe return as part of his reaffirmation that his administration has a sacred duty to protect every Nigerian citizen.
Mr Tinubu further vowed that the Federal Government is determined to ensure that educational institutions remain sanctuaries of knowledge, growth, and opportunity, and totally free from the menacing acts of terrorists.
