Nigerians, not government, are responsible for incessant dollar rise, says Omokri
Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has suggested that Nigerians, not the government, are responsible for the incessant dollar rise.
In a tweet on Monday, Mr Omokri, who was reacting to the continued decrease of the value of the naira claimed that Nigerians need to make input into building the value of the naira.
“Naira is falling, and you are accusing the government? What about you? Every year, 76 million Nigerians spend $5 billion on MTN. Google it. Where do you think that money is going to? South Africa, of course. A strong Naira begins with you,” Mr Omokri wrote.
“We are not serious about the Naira. If just half of that 76 million people port to Glo, the Naira will shoot up in value IMMEDIATELY. We are funding our neighbour when there is no food in our house and accusing our Mother Nigeria of starving you? Which Nigerian company is making even $50 million from South Africa?,” he asked.
PoliticsNow recalls that the value of the Nigerian naira plummeted to a record N1,220 against the dollar. This is the highest the value of the naira had worsened in the history of Nigeria.
However, while economic experts have continued to applaud President Bola Tinubu for taking the bold step of floating the country’s currency, the Nigerian masses remain on the receiving end as prices of commodities continue to rise.
