The Super Eagles of Nigeria emphatically stormed to a 12-0 victory over a Dubai side on Sunday, in a warm-up match ahead of the start of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. Playing at an unnamed venue in Dubai just days before their AFCON opener, Nigeria ruthlessly tore apart their opponents.
Ademola Lookman bagged four goals to lead the spree, whilst Victor Osimhen and Moses Simon grabbed a brace apiece. Goals from Ahmed Musa and Sadiq Umar with two own goals rounded out the dozen. Manager Jose Peseiro fielded an attacking side, with the likes of Osimhen, Simon and Lookman in scintillating form ahead of AFCON.
Nigeria head to Equatorial Guinea on January 13 for their opening match against Equatorial Guinea as they chase a fourth title, having last won it in 2013 under the guidance of the late Stephen Keshi.
The Super Eagles have further warmups planned before the tournament starts, taking on Guinea on Monday. Their quest for continental glory sees them pitted against Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau after the opener with Equatorial Guinea.
Nigeria’s recent form and attacking potential, as evidenced by this 12-0 demolition, makes them one of the AFCON favourites. If they can carry this goal-scoring form into the tournament, they could well contend for the trophy as they look to draw level with Ghana on four continental titles.
