Ola Olukoyoede, the new chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has revealed that the anti graft agency will focus on driving economic development.
Mr Olukoyede speaking after his confirmation at the floor of the Nigerian Senate, explained that the anti-graft agency need to reset its focus.
“We need to reset our focus. Section 6 of the EFCC Act has given us what an anti-corruption agency should be doing. Number one, I believe we should be focused on driving economic development. Number two, we must also create an atmosphere of transparency and accountability, number three, we must help as an anti-corruption agency, to build the image of Nigeria”, he said.
After passing screening and being granted permission to address the upper house of parliament in plenary, Mr Olukoyode was confirmed as the chairman of the anti-graft agency. As crucial steps in carrying out his new role, Olukoyede outlined three focus areas and three questions. The three main focuses are on the EFCC’s mandate, pursuing accountability and openness, and enhancing Nigeria’s reputation.
He repeatedly emphasised the necessity of group accountability, increased focus on anti-graft preventive frameworks, and special attention to transactional credits.
Before now the anti-graft agency had been heavily invested in clamping down on internet fraudsters and cyber criminals.
