In a crucial match on Saturday night, the Netherlands secured their qualification for Euro 2024 with a 1-0 victory over Ireland. Wout Weghorst, the Burnley striker currently on loan at Hoffenheim, once again played the hero’s role by scoring the only goal of the game.
Weghorst had previously been the match-winner in their encounter in Dublin in September, putting Ireland in a challenging position for qualification. The Saturday night match in Amsterdam witnessed a repeat performance from the Dutch striker, sealing the victory for the Netherlands.
This triumph ensured the Netherlands finished second in Group B, with France claiming the top spot after a dominant 14-0 victory over Gibraltar. On the other hand, Ireland’s hopes were dashed long ago, facing elimination months ago due to a disappointing campaign under manager Stephen Kenny.
Throughout the match, the Irish struggled to pose a threat to the Dutch, clearly outclassed by their superior opponents. Their slim chances of reaching the playoffs through the Nations League were also extinguished last week in a 4-2 loss to Slovakia.
With only six wins in 29 competitive games under Kenny’s management, serious questions will be raised about the direction of the Irish team. In contrast, the Netherlands can confidently look forward to the Euros, thanks to Weghorst’s decisive contribution.
