The Netherlands began their Nations League campaign with a convincing 5-2 victory over Bosnia at the Philips Stadion on Saturday.
Joshua Zirkzee, making his first start for the Dutch team, opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Bosnia equalised through Ermedin Demirovic, but Tijjani Reijnders restored the home side’s lead just before half-time.
Cody Gakpo extended the Dutch advantage early in the second half. Bosnia’s veteran striker, Edin Dzeko, pulled one back, setting up a tense finish. However, late goals from Wout Weghorst and Xavi Simons sealed the win for the Netherlands.
The match marked the Dutch team’s return to action following their semi-final appearance at Euro 2024. Coach Ronald Koeman used the opportunity to refresh his squad, with an eye on the 2026 World Cup. Zirkzee, who made his debut as a substitute during the Euros, took full advantage of his starting role in the absence of Memphis Depay.
Bosnia showed flashes of danger, particularly when teenage substitute Esmir Bajraktarevic set up Dzeko’s goal with an excellent long pass. The 38-year-old Dzeko’s strike was his 66th in 136 appearances for his country.
Despite some nervous moments, the Netherlands ultimately proved too strong for their opponents. The victory gives them a strong start in their Nations League Group A3 campaign, as they look to build on their recent tournament success.
