In order to be able to continue recharging tokens on their prepaid meters, citizens have been instructed to update their devices.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) issued the directive ob Wednesday asking citizens to upgrade their devices by November 2024.
Recharging prepaid metres will not be possible for those who do not update their metres by the specified date, according to the regulatory agency.
In a message on X, previously known as Twitter, NERC stated that there is no fee associated with updating the metres.
Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) would begin to provide free tokens to facilitate the update, according to the regulator.
“If you have a prepaid meter, it may be time for an update,” the post partly read.
“From November, 2024, you may not be able to recharge your meter. However, updating is easy and free. DisCos shall commence issuance of 2 free Key Change Tokens (KCTs) which will update your meter.
“The update will not affect the units in your meter nor will it make your meter run faster than usual.”
