The Human Rights Committee of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch has reminded the police of the rights of #EndBadGovernance Movement to lead the Democracy Day June 12 protest.
in a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Jimoh Moshood, the NBA reminded the police that protest is constitutionally guaranteed. The group also told the police that they have a duty to provide security protection for the protesters as enshrined in Section 84 (4) of the Police Act.
In the letter signed by chairman of the NBA Ikeja Branch Human Rights Committee, Chinenye Udeh, Vice Chairman Joseph Opute, and Clementina Olaniyan, the Secretary says as stakeholders in the enforcement of human rights, it would closely monitor the rally and issue a report on the outcome.
The letter reads in part, “On 4th June, 2025, the EndBadGovernance Movement comprising civil society organisations, in line with section 89(4) of the Police Act (As Amended) 2024, notified your office of its intention to hold a rally on June 12, 2025 to commemorate Democracy Day.”
The letter reminded the police that the #EndBadGovernance Movement sought a virtual meeting with the Police Commissioner since a June 10 meeting he called to discuss the protest was aborted after they waited one hour. They were later told that the Lagos police boss was engaged in another official duty.
The letter added: “In light of the above, the committee uses this medium to respectfully reiterate that rally is an expression of the constitutional guaranteed right to movement, association and Assembly, and the law vests your office the statutory duty to protect the rights and freedom of every person as provided in the constitution and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights. In addition, section 84(4) provides that where a person or organisation notifies your office to its intention to hold rally, the police shall provide security cover for the rally.”
The #EndBadGovernance Movement called the June 12 protest in reaction to President Bola Tinubu’s May 29 broadcast that he had done well in two years.
In reaction to the claim, the group urged Nigerians to bring their empty pots and pans for the June 12 protest.
The take-off point for the Lagos leg of the protest is at the Ikeja Under Bridge, at 7 am.
