Natasha vs Akpabio: We have slaves not lawmakers, says Aisha Yesufu, as Nigerians descend on Senate

Nigerians have faulted Senate President Godswill Akpabio for presiding over the Senate seating where Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was handed over six months suspension..

The Senate Ethics and Code of Conduct committee recommended six months suspension for the lawmaker representing Kogi Central over breach of Senate rules. Akpabio then presided over the seating where the recommendation was implemented.

Recall that Natasha had confronted Akpabio during the particular seating, accusing him of victimizing her.

She later claimed in an interview on Arise TV that the Senate President made sexual advances at her, and her refusal was the cause of her troubles in the Senate.

For many netizens, Akpabio was wrong to have presided over the case since he was an accused.

The BBC, in its report of the suspension, said: “Nigerian lawmakers have suspended a senator for six months, a day after she submitted a petition alleging she had been sexually harassed by the senate president.

On X, Nigerians bare their minds.

@AishaYesufu said: “Nigerian Senate is full of slaves not lawmakers.”

@TonyAtambi said: “Godswill Akpabio, a very senior lawyer of 37 years at the Bar, ought to know that he should not preside over a matter in which he has been accused. But not only did he preside, he went ahead to read the suspension notice that suspending his accuser. A proper circus!!!”

@adeyanjudeji said: “The chairman of the Ethics committee that investigated Natasha was on ARISE TV two days before Akpabio asked him to investigate her & was defending Akpabio. Akpabio then sat as a judge in his own matter. Crazy country indeed! LMAO.”

@obyezeks said: “I hope those Senators in the Chamber of @NGRSenate today and the ones who conveniently disappeared all heard the last word of their inspiringly bold and unbowed colleague Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan @NatashaAkpoti? She courageously said as she left the Chamber today: “This Injustice shall not be sustained”. The wise among them will be haunted by this until her words surely come to pass. The unwise among them will not even understand what she said. For all of us that care about our democratic processes and principles, we are glad that : ‘She Said What She Said!’ A Woman like Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.”
