On Friday, a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) MI-35P helicopter experienced a crash-landing and subsequent explosion at the NAF Base in Port Harcourt. Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, officially confirmed the incident through a statement.
The unfortunate event took place at approximately 7:45 am when the helicopter was engaged in an operation against economic saboteurs in Rivers State. Following the crash, the entire crew of five members remarkably survived, sustaining only minor injuries. Currently, they are receiving medical attention at the NAF Medical Centre in Port Harcourt.
In response to the incident, the Chief of Air Staff is en route to Port Harcourt to personally assess the situation, ensure the wellbeing of the crew, and provide further directives.
This occurrence serves as a poignant reminder of the inherent dangers associated with military flying and underscores the risks faced by NAF pilots and technicians in the demanding tasks of defending the nation and thwarting criminal activities.
