Social critic, Shehu Sani, has advised the Kano Government to review the N1 million it announced as donation to each families of the state’s athletes who died in ghastly motor accident on Saturday.
The athletes who were returning from the National Sports Festival that held in Ogun State, were less than 60 kilometres to Kano when their bus slipped off a flyover bridge and landed aground. The impact resulted in the death of 22 persons, including athletes, officials and journalists.
The Kano government in a swift reaction, donated N1m each to the families of the deceased.
Sani, on his X handle, advises the government to raise the money. He said Kano is rich to give beyond N1 million to the families of the athletes and officials who died in active service.
He said: “One million for each of the deceased athletes is not enough.Kano is rich enough to do more than that. The deceased died in active service.”
meanwhile, a former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has expressed sadness over the death of the 22 contingents from the state returning from the National Sports Festival.
In a post on his official X account, @KwankwasoRM said the passing is a profound loss to the state.
He said: “I am saddened by the death of 22 members of the Kano State contingent returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta.
“Their passing is a profound loss not only to their families, but to the people of Kano and the entire country.
“I extend my condolences to their families, the Kano State Government, and the Nigerian Sports Community.
“May their souls rest in eternal peace, and may the injured have quick recovery.”
