The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has sought to clarify his stance on Islam in Nigeria, emphasizing that his administration is not enacting laws that are in opposition to Islamic principles.
Wike made these remarks during a meeting with members of the Abuja National Mosque Management Committee, led by their Chairman, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Etsu of Nupe.
The minister firmly stated that those attempting to incite religious discord were doing so with malicious intent to gain political advantages. He stressed his commitment to promoting a sense of unity and understanding among religious groups in Nigeria.
Wike further expressed his dedication to supporting any commendable cause in the nation, and he clarified, “In Nigeria, I have no reason to incite hatred towards any one religious group.”
He also pledged the FCT’s support for the preservation of the National Mosque, as well as the National Ecumenical Centre, both of which hold national significance as monuments. Wike called upon religious leaders to champion the ideals of national unity and peaceful coexistence, highlighting that no government should hesitate to uphold and maintain national monuments, whether they are associated with Christianity or Islam.
The Etsu Nupe also urged the Minister to lend his support to the maintenance efforts of the National Mosque, which have faced certain challenges in recent times.
