Prominent Nigerians have continued to knock the President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, after he revealed on national Television that the assembly clerk had credited the accounts of senators to enable them enjoy their recess.
The Senate president, immediately after realizing that he made the comment on national television, tried to take back his words, suggesting that prayers had been sent to the lawmakers as they went on break.
However, Nigerians have continued to express their outrage and disappointment with the lawmakers over the revelation as this came at a time when Nigerians continue to battle with the harsh economic condition occasioned by the recent removal of fuel subsidy.
Recall that the President Bola Tinubu-led government had earlier pleaded with Nigerians to bear the brunt of fuel subsidy removal for a better future.
However, Akpabio’s disclosure has continued to spark outrage among Nigerians who believe that the government should also bear the brunt of fuel subsidy removal.
Reacting to the now-viral video, former Kaduna senator Shehu Sani explained that crediting legislators was usually done ‘under the mute button’
“Crediting the Legislators’ accounts are done under mute button, the Uncommon Senate President mistakenly pressed the alarm,” Mr Sani said.
On his part, popular Nigerian social media influencer, Mr Macaroni lamented that while Nigerians were struggling to make sacrifices, the lawmakers were sending money to themselves to enjoy their holidays.
“The Senate President has sent very Expensive prayers out of the insufficient blessings of over 200 Million people to himself and his already blessed colleagues at the National Assembly,” Mr macaroni said.
“These are the Leaders that have asked struggling Nigerians to make sacrifices if they want things to work in the country. So while Nigerians are going through unbearable hardship, our leaders are sending money to themselves to enjoy holidays. Who are those that should be making sacrifices if not for our leaders? Do our leaders understand that leadership is about service, selfishness and sacrifice?? Why do the poor people of Nigeria have to pay for the luxurious lifestyle of the leaders?? Why??? This isn’t leadership!!!” he added.
Expressing her displeasure with the development, Funmi oladiti lamented that Nigerian lawmakers had made themselves rich with the country’s common wealth.
“I shed tears when these so called innocent and suffering Nigerians praise and give their lives to these guys!!!! They have made themselves rich with our common wealth yet we have to make sacrifices for them….. haaaaa it’s unfortunate,” she wrote.
