Mohbad, other celebrities who died in 2023

This year is slowly drawing to a close and as usual, we prepare ahead for the New Year that is forthcoming for us.
As we begin to slowly draw a close to the year 2023, it would be a time to reflect, remember and be grateful.
Death, however, is an inevitable part of life that one as a human being cannot escape from. It is an irreversible fate that was ordained from the very beginning of time. The construct of life states that ‘man was born to die’ which means as we humans are born into this world to find ourselves and fulfill our various missions, one must remember that a day would come when they would be no more, which marks the end of their journey in life.
The year 2023 in the Nigerian entertainment industry, had taken away quite a number of prolific celebrities, transitioning to the great beyond. Most of which their passing has shocked many in which we were unprepared to hear. We will mention just a few celebrities whose sudden passing has brought forth shock and mourning to their fans and also remember the works of which they had done that brought smiles to our faces and joy in our lives as actors, musicians, before departing the land of the living.
This would also be a way to celebrate their legacies and mark their legendary achievements which would be engraved in our minds for as long as we shall live.
MOHBAD (3RD JANUARY 1996 -12 SEPTEMBER 2023): Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba formerly known as Mohbad was a rapper, singer and songwriter born in Ketu, Lagos state. He was formerly signed under Marlian Records and eventually left the label in 2022. He was known for his hit songs ‘KPK (Ko Por Ke)’, ‘Feel Good’ ‘Beast’, ‘Sorry’ and ‘Peace’ which posthumously debuted on Billboard’s Hot Trending songs charts at number two in the world. The singer died at the age of 27 with his death still not being properly stated which has left various controversies. Available report indicated he died after being treated by an unlicensed nurse for an infection. The Nigerian Police had his body exhumed on 21st September and investigations are still ongoing to give a proper confirmation to his sudden demise.
CYNTHIA OKEREKE ( 20TH APRIL 1960 – 11TH JULY 2023): Cynthia Okereke, a veteran Nollywood actress passed away from a brief illness and a year after she was kidnapped while shooting a film in Enugu state. She was well known for her comic roles alongside Nkem Owoh (Osofia). Her notable works include King Jaja of Opobo, Lion Finger and Second Chance.
FAVOUR DANIELS: Favour Daniels also known as Omoge Amama was an upcoming comic actress who stole the hearts of fans from her funny online skits. Unfortunately, her life was claimed in February 2023 when she was involved in a boat accident.
SAINT OBI: Saint Obi was a popular veteran Nollywood actor who was well known for his works like Candle Light, Sakobi, Goodbye Tomorrow and Heart of Gold. The actor was reported to have suffered a protracted illness which required him to move to Jos, Plateau state for treatment and died on May 7th at the age of 57. Having not been seen in any recent movies, his demise sent shock waves to many.
MURPHY AFOLABI: Murphy Afolabi was a Nollywood actor, director and producer. He was known for his features in movies like Omo Ghetto, Omo Ekun, Omo Mushin and Omo Alhaja. He reportedly slumped in his bathroom and died on May 14th 2023 and was buried the next day in his uncompleted house in Ikorodu.
CHRIS MBA: Chris Mba was a veteran pop musician who was famous for his hit songs like Baby Don’t Cry, Funky Situation, We Need Each Other and Love Everlasting. It was noted that he was battling with cardiovascular diseases for a while and later died in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) on the 3rd of May at the age of 60.
Though their physical presence is no more, it is good to acknowledge their achievements in the Nigerian entertainment industry and uphold their legacies. They and many other Nigerian celebrities who have passed on but were not mentioned in this list have contributed greatly to the entertainment industry which has touched the lives of many and left irreplaceable marks in their hearts of their fans.
Their works of art will still be appreciated by many more generations to come in the future and we are left to remember these and many more deceased extraordinary individuals for their talent, passion and life.
