Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu, has said that he would ban government officials from using foreign-made vehicles if he were Nigeria’s president.
Mr Moghalu who contested the 2019 presidential election, was reacting to a recent report of National Assembly bureaucracy purchasing Toyota Land Cruisers worth over N100 million each for lawmakers.
According to Mr Moghalu, no foreign vehicles should be used as official government cars when there are locally produced alternatives.
“If I were President of Nigeria or Governor of a State, no government official will drive a foreign made vehicle at government expense (procurement) when we have local alternatives. That is one demonstration of patriotic leadership and commitment to cutting the cost of governance,” a post by Moghalu read.
His comment comes just as the Bola Tinubu-led government approaches the World Bank for a fresh $1.5billion loan.
Mr Moghalu condemned the plan to purchase a N160 million SUV for each lawmaker as the federal government takes fresh loan from the World Bank.
