Terem Moffi, the OGC Nice forward, has been called up to replace the injured Victor Boniface in Nigeria’s squad for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
Boniface sustained a groin injury during training, ruling him out of the competition. The 23-year-old Bayer Leverkusen star is expected to be sidelined for approximately six weeks, which will be terrible news for the Bundesliga club as Boniface has been critical to their leading position in the German top division.
In light of Boniface’s injury, Moffi will now join the Super Eagles in their quest for continental glory. However, his inclusion in the squad is subject to approval from both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and his Ligue 1 club, OGC Nice. Moffi’s surprise omission from the final squad initially raised eyebrows, considering his consistent performance and goal-scoring prowess in Ligue 1.
Boniface, who was set to represent Nigeria in the biggest football tournament on the continent, will now return to Germany for treatment of his groin injury. The talented 23-year-old will undergo rehabilitation and recovery to ensure a swift return to the pitch.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will await the necessary approvals to register Moffi for the tournament. Once approved, Moffi will join his national teammates as they aim to lift the prestigious trophy for a fourth time.
