Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has officially confirmed that the automated process for passport applications will commence operations on January 8, 2024. The minister, who had previously announced the Federal Government’s efforts toward full passport application automation, stated in December that the system was “99% done,” encompassing the uploading of passport photos and supporting documents.
During an inspection of Nigeria Immigration Service facilities in Abuja on Monday, alongside the Comptroller General of the Service, Wura-Ola Adepoju, Tunji-Ojo reiterated that Nigerians would have the opportunity to apply and complete their passport application process entirely online without the need for human contact.
The minister disclosed that the training process has commenced, paving the way for the live launch of the automation on January 8. He emphasized that this initiative would significantly reduce human contact in passport acquisition, providing a streamlined and efficient experience for applicants in alignment with the vision of Mr. President’s Renewed Hope.
Tunji-Ojo also highlighted that the automated system would enhance the country’s security architecture, facilitating the prompt detection of fraudulent passport applications and minimizing bureaucratic obstacles.
