Renowned Constitutional Lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Dr. Tunji Abayomi has said that Military dictatorship has never and will never give African society benevolent government .
Abayomi in a statement in Akure, the Ondo State Capital on Sunday noted that what we need to insist upon is a democracy that works for the peoples of Africa comfortably in keeping with African tradition
According to him, ” Have we not lived through military dictatorship before? What was it’s typical legacy other than unjust and unwarranted killings and killings of self and others just to sustain power.”
He pointed out ” What was the military testament in government as measured in post military Africa? Is it not opportunism, chaos, corruption, disorder and disunity? As i said at page 7-8 in my detention ( by the military government) work, ‘State and Citizens.”‘
The human rights activist said, “But, what should be the nature of such government and what should it not be? The lessons of history has amply demonstrated that government based on conquest by the sword has never and probably will never give mankind sufficient honour, respect or happiness in life’s short journey.
“When I contemplate the natural freedom endowed by God on man so that mankind can achieve for himself fulfillment and happiness on earth and after much study of dictatorship especially in our land, I need no proof beyond mere recognition to know that dictatorship is a fraud.
“To purge ourselves from any benefits arising from autocracy, we need to understand it. A dictator is an opportunist compared to nothing but a ruffian. He hates truth and knows no right from wrong, he respects no man, regards no community, he confounds the mind, debases and degenerates the intellect.
“More fatal is that he trusts nobody. A savage to Citizens and pestilence to foreigners. He is brutal justifying all evil acts by the banal end of them, he loathes human dignity, he is rapacious. Being a tyrant, he gives death but never believes, rather foolishly, anon, that he is but a man and not God. He often lives in illusion and personal myth until usually, his end becomes inevitably sad….”, Abayomi added.
