Walter Mazzarri marked his comeback to the Napoli managerial position after over a decade with a thrilling 2-1 away victory against top-four rivals Atalanta on Saturday.
Despite facing adversity, including a VAR-disallowed goal from Amir Rrahmani and losing two defenders to knee injuries in the first half, Mazzarri inspired a resilient performance from his understrength team.
The breakthrough arrived in the 60th minute with a well-executed header from the emerging Georgian talent, Kvicha Kvaratskhelia. However, Atalanta responded swiftly, leveling the score with a header from Ademola Lookman, setting the stage for a tense finale.
The decisive moment unfolded in the 73rd minute when substitute Victor Osimhen, returning from a six-week thigh injury layoff, intercepted a goalkeeper clearance. Opting for teamwork, Osimhen unselfishly passed to fellow substitute Eljif Elmas, who emphatically scored the late winner, securing maximum points for Napoli.
This goal exemplified the selfless spirit that defined Mazzarri’s earlier successful tenure at the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona from 2009 to 2013. Following a challenging season so far, the Napoli manager aims to use this hard-fought victory as a catalyst for a resurgence.
