Marseille have ended their working relationship with manager Gennaro Gattuso after the club suffered a decline in performances. The 46-year-old Italian was hired in September 2023 to replace Marcelino Toral. However, Marseille have now decided to part ways with Gattuso following a sequence of five games without a victory.
Out of their last five league fixtures, Marseille have experienced two losses and three draws. This poor run of results leaves the team sitting 9th in Ligue 1 in the 2023/2024 campaign. Gattuso was previously in charge at Valencia, Napoli and AC Milan before taking over at Marseille less than five months ago.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Marseille thanked Gattuso and his coaching personnel for their dedication and professionalism during their time at the club. They now begin the search for a new manager, with reports suggesting that Frenchman Jean-Louis Gasset leads the list of candidates.
Gasset most recently led the Ivory Coast national side but was dismissed after a poor showing in the group stages. His last role at club level was with Bordeaux in Ligue 1. Marseille will hope to appoint a new manager swiftly as they continue their busy period.
The team host Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday night in the second leg of their Europa League playoff tie. They then entertain 14th-place Montpellier on Sunday in Ligue 1, needing improved performances to turn around their recent slump.
