Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is set to be sidelined until April following surgery to address a groin injury. The 28-year-old, whose contract expires this summer, has faced numerous setbacks in a disrupted season, making only 19 appearances and scoring two goals. Martial has been out of action since the 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth on December 9, with his last on-field moment marked by cheers from United fans during his substitution.
The club confirmed the successful surgery, stating, “Anthony Martial has completed successful surgery to address a groin complaint and will be out of action for about 10 weeks as he rehabilitates. We wish Anthony a speedy recovery and look forward to his return.”
Martial’s injury woes add to a challenging season and contribute to the likelihood of his departure in the summer. United opted not to trigger the option to extend his contract by an additional year. Despite a promising start to his United career after joining from Monaco in 2015, Martial has struggled to consistently fulfill his potential, tallying 90 goals in 317 appearances.
The extended absence of Martial might prompt Manchester United to reassess their approach to the upcoming transfer window. While the focus has been on streamlining the squad rather than signings, the team now finds itself with Rasmus Højlund and Marcus Rashford as the only options through the middle due to Martial’s injury.
