Manchester United pulled off a remarkable comeback to beat Aston Villa 3-2 at Old Trafford on Tuesday. The home side found themselves 2-0 down after just 26 minutes following goals from John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker. However, a rousing second-half display saw United score three times without reply to snatch an unlikely victory.
The result provides a much-needed boost for United manager Erik Ten Hag, whose side were on a four-match winless run before this fixture. It also marked a special day for United’s prospective new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe, whose representative Sir Dave Brailsford was in attendance to watch a thriller unfold.
Alejandro Garnacho was the hero for United, netting twice to drag his side back into the match after a poor first half and an earlier disallowed goal. Yet, the winning goal came from £72 million summer signing Rasmus Hojlund, who broke his 16-game domestic scoring duck with an 82nd-minute volley to seal the comeback.
The victory lifts United to 6th position in the table and serves as encouragement that they can still achieve a top-four finish this campaign. However, protests against the club’s ownership remained in full voice, with fans eager for the Glazer family to relinquish control.
Ratcliffe’s impending minority stake investment brings the promise of change at the boardroom level. Still, most supporters continue to demand a full buy-out, despite the boost this result provides on the pitch.
