Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been granted compassionate leave following the death of his grandmother and returned to his native Spain, manager Pep Guardiola confirmed on Friday.
It is unlikely the defensive midfielder will feature when the FA Cup holders begin their trophy defence at home to Huddersfield Town on Sunday.
“Rodri, unfortunately, his grandmother passed away yesterday and he is in Madrid,” Guardiola told reporters. “Today and tomorrow he will not be here. Hopefully, he will come back for the game but, if he needs to stay, family issues are the most important thing.”
Several first-team stars are doubtful through illness, while Kevin De Bruyne continues his recovery from injury. Guardiola said he will not rush the Belgian playmaker back into action. Top scorer Erling Haaland and winger Jeremy Doku are still sidelined but are nearing full fitness.
The City boss remained tight-lipped about potential January transfer window activity, including speculation over Kalvin Phillips’ future. He also updated on Jack Grealish’s well-being after the England midfielder’s family home was burgled over the Christmas period.
