Lookman submits transfer request amid Atalanta dispute

Nigerian international Ademola Lookman has publicly announced his decision to submit a formal transfer request to Atalanta, citing “broken promises” and “poor treatment” by the club’s management.

The 27-year-old winger took to social media platform X to express his frustration, claiming Atalanta reneged on an agreement to let him leave if a suitable offer arrived this summer.

Lookman, a target for Inter Milan, emphasised his loyalty in the past but now feels compelled to seek an exit.

The dispute follows a standout season in which Lookman made history by scoring a hat-trick in the 2023/2024 UEFA Europa League final, becoming the first player in 49 years to achieve the feat in a European final.

Despite his contributions, he alleges the club has obstructed a transfer despite receiving an acceptable bid. Lookman stated he “loved every moment” at Atalanta but believes it is “the right time to move on and experience a new adventure.”

Lookman’s relationship with Atalanta has deteriorated over several months, with the player accusing the club of unfair treatment.

He removed all references to Atalanta from his social media profiles, signalling a clear break.

His statement coincided with the eve of his third anniversary at the club, having joined from RB Leipzig on August 4, 2022.

Since then, only Inter’s Lautaro Martínez (69) has recorded more Serie A goal involvements than Lookman’s 57 (39 goals, 18 assists).

The public nature of the dispute has escalated tensions, with Lookman insisting he has “no choice but to speak out.”

He reiterated his commitment to the club during his tenure but criticised management for failing to honour agreements.

Atalanta have yet to issue an official response, leaving his future uncertain as Inter Milan monitor the situation.

Lookman’s departure would mark a significant loss for Atalanta, given his consistent performances and pivotal role in their recent success.

The transfer saga now hinges on whether the club will soften its stance or risk further alienation of a key player.
