Llorente strike sees 10-man Atletico edge past Sevilla

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side secured a vital 1-0 victory away at Sevilla on Saturday evening, thanks to a second-half strike from Marcos Llorente. The goal, which came just after the restart, proved decisive as Atletico held on despite going down to 10 men in the final 20 minutes.

The win sees Atletico reclaim third spot in La Liga, level on 38 points with fourth-placed Barcelona. They remain seven points adrift of leaders Real Madrid, who sit atop the Spanish top flight.

Llorente was the matchwinner for the visitors, pouncing on a saved effort to fire home from close range for what proved the only goal of the contest. Atletico were reduced to 10 men with 20 minutes remaining when substitute defender Caglar Soyuncu was shown a straight red card just minutes after coming on.

However, despite the numerical disadvantage, Simeone’s men held firm to secure a vital victory. Atletico next faces surprise second-placed package Girona as they look to continue their push for a top-four finish.
