Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has asserted that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan persecuted him and his family, alleging that Jonathan jeopardized his career and familial well-being due to political motivations.
Lamido detailed these claims in a conversation with Daily Trust, where he expressed his grievances about the various forms of persecution he has endured throughout his political journey. Despite the challenges, Lamido emphasized that his primary focus remains on Nigeria, acknowledging the country’s kindness to him.
The former governor lamented that his contributions, dating back to 1979 when he served in the House of Representatives, often go unrecognized. He recounted facing humiliation, persecution, and considerable suffering.
Lamido pointedly accused President Jonathan, a member of his own party, of orchestrating legal actions against him and his children, labeling them as thieves. According to Lamido, this drastic measure was taken solely to advance Jonathan’s political ambitions.
Reflecting on his tumultuous experiences, Lamido expressed unwavering determination, stating that no amount of harassment or persecution would deter him. He underscored his commitment to the larger entity of Nigeria, acknowledging the country’s pivotal role in his personal growth. Lamido recounted his journey from a village to various significant roles, including his tenure as a member of the House of Representatives in 1979, nearly 45 years ago. Despite any misconceptions or challenges, Lamido remains resolute in his determination to reciprocate the kindness he received from Nigeria throughout his life.
“People don’t see my contributions right from 1979 in the House of Reps; what I went through in terms of humiliation, persecution, suffering to the point that even my own party’s President Jonathan arraigned me and my kids, docked as thieves. Me – a senior member of the PDP, a founding member of the party, accused by my own president because of his political interest. So, he had to destroy me, ruin my career and family, arraigned me in court, just to achieve his political ambition,” Lamido said.
“I have been through all kinds of things that I am more concerned about the bigger picture called Nigeria because Nigeria has been very, very kind to me. Whatever you do to me in terms of harassing me, trying to persecute me, will not make me give up. I’m undeterred because this country has been fair to me, it has been good to me. It gave me face to grow from my village to what I am today, passing through all kinds of difficulties to be a member of the House of Reps in 1979 (45 years ago), to being a party chairman, to being this and that…, therefore what do I do, in spite of the misconception, to pay back to Nigeria what I got,” he added.
