Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello  escapes assassination

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt orchestrated by gunmen disguised in military attire along the Lokoja-Abuja road.

According to information obtained by PoliticsNow, the incident occurred at approximately 4 pm on October 22, in close proximity to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

A recent statement from Kogi State’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, revealed that the assassination attempt on Governor Bello transpired a few kilometers away from Abuja. The governor was en route to an official engagement in the nation’s capital from Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State.

Fanwo conveyed, “The assailants, clad in military uniforms, intercepted the Governor’s convoy and opened fire indiscriminately at his vehicle and other vehicles within the convoy. It was thanks to the swift response of the security personnel assigned to the Governor that the sinister intentions of the unidentified attackers were thwarted.”

“The attacks occurred at three distinct locations, with the final incident occurring near Kwali, in the Federal Capital Territory, at approximately 4:20 pm. Reports of these unusual assaults have been meticulously documented at both the state and national security agencies, ensuring that a thorough and timely investigation is conducted to prevent future occurrences.”

Fanwo added, “We are well aware that certain individuals are determined to depict Kogi as an unsafe environment in advance of the Governorship Poll scheduled for November 11, 2023. As an administration, we are resolute in our commitment to protect our citizens from security threats posed by desperate politicians who sponsor violence and terrorism.

“We urge our citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities within the region to the appropriate security authorities. Ensuring security is the government’s responsibility, and we want to reassure you that the peace we have enjoyed as a state over the past eight years will not be compromised by violent politics.”
