The Niger military junta has severed ties with the Nigerian government after peace talks between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the military junta failed to end the ongoing impasse in the coup-torn nation, a report by Daily Trust reveals.
To prevent a potential conflict with the junta, ECOWAS gave President Mohamed Bazoum a seven-day deadline to be reinstated.
However, on Thursday, President Bola Tinubu dispatched a powerful delegation to the nation to meet with the coup organisers.
The junta’s representatives were the only ones the delegation led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) met with.
Niger later severed ties with Nigeria, Togo, its former coloniser France, and the United States.
According to Radio France International, one of the putschists allegedly announced on state television that “the functions of the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassadors of the Republic of Niger” to France, Nigeria, Togo, and the United States were terminated.
