In a remarkable turn of events, Cádiz stunned Atlético Madrid with a 2-0 victory at Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla on Saturday, recording back-to-back home wins against the Madrid giants. The result is a massive boost to Cádiz’s hopes of avoiding relegation from La Liga this season.
The underdogs took the lead in the 24th minute when a beautifully crafted move orchestrated by Robert Navarro culminated in Juanmi heading home from Rubén Sobrino’s cross. Despite Atlético’s efforts to find an equaliser, Cádiz’s defence remained resolute, frustrating the visitors’ attacking threats.
Cádiz doubled their advantage in the 64th minute through a moment of brilliance from Juanmi. Javi Hernández played a simple ball forward, and the striker eased past Gabriel Paulista before coolly slotting past the goalkeeper. It was Juanmi’s third goal in as many games, more than he had scored in his previous 24 La Liga appearances combined.
Atlético threw everything at Cádiz in search of a way back into the match, but goalkeeper Conan Ledesma produced a brilliant save to deny Marcos Llorente’s header, ensuring the hosts would end their 23-match winless streak in La Liga – a run stretching back to September.
The victory sees Cádiz move within two points of safety while piling more misery on Atlético’s dismal away form. Diego Simeone’s side have now won just one of their last 10 away league matches.
