Gloria Carter, mother of American rap icon, Jay Z has exchanged vows with her longtime partner, Roxanne Wilshire during a star-studded ceremony.
The wedding celebration which took place at Tribeca 360° in Manhattan on Sunday, welcomed an array of A-listers, including; entertainment mogul Tyler Perry, singer Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé’s mom, Tina Knowles, Corey Gamble, and ‘Good Morning America’ co-anchor, Robin Roberts.
Jay-Z and his wife, Beyoncé, who took a break from her ‘Renaissance Tour’ and their first child, Blue Ivy were at the forefront during the event with attendees partying until the early hours of Monday morning July 3.
Since she openly revealed her sexual orientation as a lesbian in 2017 via Jay-Z’s song “Smile” from the album “4:44,” Gloria Carter has been inspiring members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Jay-Z’s discussion of his mother’s sexuality in the single, which was a highly personal song, attracted an initial reluctance from her, according to the rapper.
The mother and son, however, spoke in-depth about it.
She eventually agreed after Jay-Z allayed her concerns and contributed a poem she had written that was incorporated into the song.
In the song, Jay-Z established support for them, stating: “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian/Had to hide in the closet, so she medicates/Society shame and the pain was too much to take.
“Cried tears of joy when you fell in love/Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her/I just wanna see you smile through all the hate/Marie Antoinette, baby, let ’em eat cake.”
During an appearance on “The Shop: Uninterrupted,” Jay Z revealed, “When she first heard that song, she got super defensive… We talked through it. And then, when she flew back to L.A., she had written a poem. She wrote that on the plane. It came with the American Airlines notepad… I was like, ‘You got bars, ma!’”
Gloria Carter began dating Wilshire in 2018, and five years later, they tied the knot in front of family and friends.
