Japa to Canada: ‘No job, depression sets in’, son of Foursquare Church GO, Iyin Aboyeji, explains return to Nigeria

Iyin Aboyeji, a Fintech entrepreneur and son of General Overseer (GO) of Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, Sam Aboyeji, has advised people wishing to Japa to first be sure that is what God wants for them.

Japa is the Nigerian word for relocating abroad in search of greener pasture.

Iyin, who was last year conferred with the National Honour of OON by President Muhammadu Buhari, said after he relocated to Canada in search of greener pastures and couldn’t found a job, plus he was broke, he decided to return back to Nigeria.

Iyin made the comment while responding to a post by Tolu Ogunlesi on X, formerly Twitter who asked: “People who returned back to Nigeria, what was the thing that made you finally decide to return? – Let’s have it.”

Replying to the question, Iyin said: “I was so depressed in Canada. No money. No job. The time for my student visa was running out and my first startup just effectively failed. I figured if I was doing this badly in Canada, Nigeria couldn’t be much worse so I moved.”

In another post, Iyin clarified that he wasn’t discouraging people from japa, but that they must be sure that is what God wants for them.

He said: “I am not anti-japa o. You can ask around how many japa plans I have supported. All I say is just make sure you are where God needs you to be. My two brothers also studied in Canada and they are flourishing there. It just didn’t work for me but may God make it work for you.”
