In a crucial Euro 2024 qualifier held in Rome on Friday night, the Italian national football team secured a significant 5-2 victory over North Macedonia, keeping their hopes of automatic qualification alive.
Fueled by a stellar performance from Juventus forward Federico Chiesa, who netted a brace, the Azzurri dominated the first half, establishing a commanding 3-0 lead. However, North Macedonia’s substitute, Jani Antonov, staged a comeback in the second half, scoring two goals to narrow the deficit to 3-2 and create tension for Italy in front of their home fans.
Antonov’s goals evoked memories of Italy’s shocking loss to North Macedonia in World Cup qualifying the previous year, leading to a playoff. Nonetheless, late goals from Giacomo Raspadori and Stephan El Shaarawy ultimately secured the crucial three points for Italy.
With this victory, Italy now sits in second place in their Euro 2024 qualifying group, positioning them to secure automatic qualification with just a draw in their upcoming final match against Ukraine.
Following their World Cup disappointment, Italy and manager Luciano Spalletti will be relieved to regain control of their destiny. However, their momentary lapse in the second half, letting a comfortable lead slip away, made the path to victory more challenging.
