Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State and his Rivers State colleague, Siminalayi Fubara, have arrived for the funeral service of former Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank Plc, Dr Herbert Wigwe, his wife, Chizoba and son, Chizzy.
Wigwe, Chizoba and Chizi, died in a helicopter crash in California, United States of America on February 9, 2024.
The funeral service is holding at the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Isiokpo in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Already seated are dignitaries, guests, hundreds of mourners, members of the clergy, traditional rulers from Omoeke, Wigwe’s hometown and monarchs from Isiokpo.
A former Nigerian Ambassador to Scandinavian countries, Dr Godknows Igali, also arrived in the company of Governor Diri.
Rivers Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, led security operatives to the funeral venue.
The police on Friday said they had taken significant steps to reinforce security arrangements to ensure a peaceful and well-organised burial ceremony for the deceased.
Former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, announced his arrival on X.
“I have arrived at the RCCG Lion of Judah Parish in Isiokpo, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for the funeral service of my dear friend, the late Herbert Wigwe, his wife, Chizoba, and son, Chizi,” he tweeted shortly on arrival.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos State, founder and Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote; former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi: 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, the immediate past Bayelsa Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, and former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, are also among dignitaries at the funeral.
Tears welled up in many faces that graced the solemn occasion at Isiokpo community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Wigwe who until his death was the Chief Executive of Access Holdings, his wife and 29-year-old son were among those aboard the ill-fated helicopter in California on February 9, 2024.
