The England Football Association has initiated an investigation into potential breaches of betting regulations by Newcastle United’s recent acquisition, Sandro Tonali. The 23-year-old Italian international, who made a high-profile move to the Magpies in a £55 million deal from AC Milan this summer, is facing scrutiny.
Regrettably, Tonali has been handed a 10-month suspension by the Italian Football Federation after he confessed to placing bets on football matches during his previous tenures with Brescia and AC Milan. FIFA has officially ratified this ban, which was mutually agreed upon with the FA, following Tonali’s acceptance of a plea bargain as part of an inquiry into unlawful betting activities. As part of his penalties, he is also required to pay a fine of €20,000 and participate in therapy sessions and public appearances.
Newcastle’s Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, described the investigation as a “whirlwind” and a “massive shock.” However, he emphasized that the club’s foremost concern is to support and safeguard the player. While Tonali will be permitted to continue training with the squad, he will not be eligible to participate in matches until August 27, 2024.
Manager Eddie Howe confirmed that Tonali has already commenced his 10-month suspension and acknowledged that it presents a significant mental challenge. Nevertheless, the coaching staff is determined to assist him in becoming an improved player during this period. The club has asserted that their top priority is to offer unwavering support to the midfielder throughout this challenging phase.
