Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has surprised many by stating that he will retire within months if his team successfully defends last season’s historic English Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League treble. Despite having a contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2025, Guardiola emphasized that he will step away entirely at the conclusion of the 2023/2024 campaign if City achieves consecutive trebles.

Guardiola’s firm declaration caught some off guard, especially considering no English club has ever won the treble in consecutive seasons. Historically, clubs that have achieved this feat twice did so with a gap of more than five years between the two trebles. Given City’s recent form, winning only three of their last nine EPL games and currently sitting fourth after a defeat to Aston Villa, the chances of Guardiola retiring may seem slim.
City will begin their FA Cup title defense in early January against Championship side Huddersfield Town. In the UEFA Champions League, they have won all five group matches so far and are guaranteed a seeded place in the Round of 16 draw later this month before their final group fixture.
While some skeptically view Guardiola’s retirement promise, there remains a possibility that the most successful manager in City’s history could walk away at the end of the season if his team cements its place in football history with another treble.
