Celebrated Nigerian comedienne and actress, Helen Paul, recently revealed that she provided the iconic voice for the line “Uncle, please tell us a story” in Psquare’s hit song ‘Story,’ released in 2005.
In an interview on the Honest Bunch Podcast, Helen shared the background of how she secured the role. At the time, she was working as a receptionist and was not familiar with Psquare’s potential success. The comedian recounted that Psquare came to the studio for a recording, expecting children for a specific voice role.
Helen, despite her initial lack of knowledge about Psquare, was chosen for her remarkable ability to mimic voices. She recalled, “Ayoadeife said, ‘We have somebody who can do this voice, and this person can do all the range children.’” Even though she didn’t fully grasp the concept of vocal range, her talent secured her the job.
“At that time, I was a receptionist, and when they told them, they agreed. And the guy just said, ‘Helen, you will work in the nights, but we’re not paying much.’ I said, ‘I don’t care; just buy me a ‘soft drink,’ because I loved it at the time,” she added.
The opportunity not only elevated Helen’s profile in the entertainment industry but also opened doors to numerous voiceover jobs. Reflecting on the experience, she mentioned, “The next job I did was for another milk product. At that point, my salary was N9,500; I started receiving about N400,000 or N450,000 every month.”
