As members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) begin staging statewide demonstrations against the elimination of the petrol subsidy, heavy security presence was recorded at the Ikeja under-bridge in Lagos.
The demonstration comes as the President Bola Tinubu led government failed to reach a truce with the Nigerian labour union over the implementation of palliative measures in the wake of hardships that have continued to hit Nigerians as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy.
The President’s palliatives, according to the organised labour, did little to lessen the impact of the suffering in the nation during his Monday night national broadcast.
Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, clearly said that the planned national protest would take place on Wednesday.
Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President, appealed to organised labour to postpone the scheduled protest while briefing State House reporters at the conclusion of the Presidential Steering Committee on Palliatives held at the State House, Abuja.
“We have laid out the plans, the interventions of Mr. President, as you all heard in his broadcast yesterday (Monday), we made it clear that this was just Mr. President’s initial rollout and interventions and that conversations will be ongoing as we go along,” Mr Gbajabiamila said.
