Seven-time Formula One world champion, Lewis Hamilton, has shocked the racing world by announcing he will be leaving Mercedes to join Ferrari from the 2025 season onwards. Both prestigious teams confirmed the blockbuster move that will see Hamilton partner Charles Leclerc at Maranello.
Hamilton, 39, has spent the past 11 seasons with Mercedes, enjoying unbelievable success with the Silver Arrows. However, with his contract containing a one-year break clause, the British legend has opted to pursue a new challenge with the most famous team in F1 history – Scuderia Ferrari.
Carlos Sainz will depart Ferrari at the end of 2024 to make way for Hamilton, bringing to an end his spell in red that began in 2021. Sainz stated that while he still has a long season ahead with Ferrari, news about his future will emerge in due course.
The pairing of Hamilton and Leclerc promises to be formidable, with both drivers hungry to deliver Ferrari their first drivers’ championship since Kimi Raikkonen in 2007. Hamilton has not won a race since the end of 2021 and will be aiming to rediscover his best form in iconic Ferrari red.
For Mercedes, they must now search for a replacement partner for George Russell, having formed the most statistically successful driver line-up the sport has ever witnessed alongside Hamilton. Carlos Sainz is one potential option, while the Silver Arrows will also have one eye on Audi’s 2026 entry.
