Nottingham Forest pulled off a shock 2-1 home victory over Manchester United on Saturday, their first win against the Red Devils since 1994. Morgan Gibbs-White struck a superb late winner to seal a memorable triumph for new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
United had dominated this fixture in recent decades, going 11 games without defeat. However, a disjointed performance saw Erik ten Hag’s men fall behind to Nicolas Dominguez’s opener before Marcus Rashford equalised following a calamitous error by goalkeeper Matt Turner.
However, Forest showed resilience to regain the lead just minutes later through Gibbs-White’s blistering drive which left Andre Onana grasping at thin air. Despite late pressure, the home side held on for a statement victory to move them further above the EPL relegation zone.
For United, this forgettable display brought the curtain down on a turbulent 2023. Outplayed and outfought by fired-up opponents, Ten Hag will demand an immediate response when the campaign resumes in a week’s time.
The legendary Sir Alex Ferguson was among the spectators at the City Ground, looking on as the team he once managed to such success stumbled once more under their latest manager. Further soul-searching and squad strengthening appears necessary if the Red Devils are to rejoin the elite.
