Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu has called on African leaders to continue to work in developing democracies across the region.
Mr Moghalu’s call comes amid a wave of widespread military takeovers across African countries.
PoliticsNow on Wednesday reported that President Ali Bongo was on Wednesday ousted by a military coup that occurred at the early hours of Wednesday.
The Gabonese president was dethroned by the military after he was declared winner of the country’s election gearing up towards assuming the country’s presidency role for a third time.
However, faulting the actions of the coup plotters in a tweet on Wednesday, Mr Moghalu argued that African nations have in the past tried out military rule and failed.
Suggesting that African countries must keep working on their democracies, he wrote: “On Gabon: The problem with military rule is that we have tried it in much of Africa. It FAILED. Some would argue it left Africa poorer. We have to keep working on our democracies in Africa, and if necessary adapting it to be more context-specific.”
“The military in Asia transformed (South Korea, Indonesia). The ones in Africa did not. This points to what I have always said that the problem in Africa is how we think (or don’t think), whether politicians,” he added.
