On Saturday night, the French national team etched its name in history by demolishing Gibraltar 14-0 in a 2024 Euro qualifier match. This resounding victory established a new record for the largest margin of victory in a European Championship qualifier, surpassing Germany’s previous record set in 2006.
The onslaught commenced early, with an own goal giving France a 1-0 lead after just 3 minutes. Gibraltar’s situation worsened when defender Ethan Santos received a straight red card in the 18th minute for a dangerous tackle on the 17-year-old French newcomer Warren Zaire-Emery, who, in addition to making his senior debut, scored France’s second goal.
With Gibraltar reduced to 10 men, France accelerated its offensive efforts. Star striker Kylian Mbappe secured a hat trick, and Kingsley Coman found the net twice. Zaire-Emery, in his second goal, became France’s second-youngest goal scorer ever at 17 years and 255 days.
By halftime, Les Bleus led 7-0, and the relentless pace persisted in the second half. Olivier Giroud, coming off the bench, contributed a brace, enabling France to surpass Germany’s previous record of 13-0 set in 2006.
This monumental result solidifies France’s position at the top of Group B in the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, slated to take place in Germany. Following the emphatic victory over Gibraltar, France appears well-positioned to secure a top seed for the tournament next summer, establishing themselves as strong contenders for the European title on German soil.
