Benjamin Mendy, the ex-Manchester City defender, has initiated legal action against the club for unpaid wages, according to his lawyer, Nick De Marco KC.
Mendy faced suspension from Manchester City in August 2021 due to charges of rape and sexual assault. Despite being found not guilty on all counts in January and June 2023, the club had ceased paying his £100,000-a-week wages since September 2021, and this continued until his contract concluded in June 2023.
De Marco, representing Mendy, revealed that the player was deprived of wages for over 18 months. A claim for loss of earnings has been formally filed against the club and is scheduled to be heard at an Employment Tribunal.
Once the most expensive defender in the Premier League upon his £52 million transfer from Monaco to City in 2017, Mendy currently plies his trade with Lorient in Ligue 1, having joined on a free transfer after being released by City following his acquittals.
