Former Kwara  governor Abdulfatah Ahmed to face charges over alleged N10 billion diversion

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is gearing up to arraign former Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, in connection with an alleged diversion of over N10 billion during his tenure. Ahmed, who served as governor from May 29, 2011, to May 29, 2019, recently honored an invitation from the anti-graft agency at the Ilorin zonal office.

This marks the third instance of Ahmed facing interrogation regarding the matter, having initially been invited on December 8, 2020.

According to sources within the EFCC, the investigation into the alleged diversion, misappropriation of funds, and money laundering has been ongoing since 2019.

During the recent interrogation, Ahmed was reportedly questioned extensively about the alleged diversion and mismanagement of funds during his tenure as governor. The EFCC, in conceding to Ahmed’s request, allowed him to voluntarily report to their Ilorin office.

An official statement from the EFCC regarding the interrogation and subsequent detention of the former governor is anticipated, as authorities aim to finalize the investigation and proceed with Ahmed’s arraignment before the Federal High Court in Ilorin.

Responding to inquiries about Ahmed’s interaction with the EFCC, the ex-governor’s spokesman, Wahab Oba described the visit as routine, asserting Ahmed’s willingness to address any queries pertaining to his time as governor.

Abdulfatah Ahmed’s background includes a B.Sc in Chemistry and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Ilorin. Prior to his political career, he held various positions in academia and banking, including roles at Guaranty Trust Bank and Societe Generale Bank Nigeria. Ahmed served as Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development under Bukola Saraki’s administration before assuming the governorship of Kwara State.

As developments unfold, the public awaits further updates on the legal proceedings against the former governor and the outcome of the ongoing investigation into the alleged financial irregularities during his tenure.
