The Kogi election is the most difficult to predict among the three states having off-circle elections. The other states are; Imo and Bayelsa. Although 18, there are only three major candidates in the Kogi election. They are; Murtala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The facts
- Kogi State has 21 local governments and 1,932,654 registered voters. Out of the number, 1,833,160 have collected their PVCs. They are the ones to decide who will win the election.
- The three major candidates in Kogi represents the three major ethic groups in the state. Ajaka is from the Igala ethnic stock. Melaye is Okun. Ododo is Ebira.
- Ododo hails from Okene, the South Central Senatorial District comprising five local governments. They are; Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okehi, Okene and Ogori-Mangogo.
- Ajaka hails from Kogi East Senatorial District, which has the highest number of local governments in Kogi. The district comprises Idah, Ibaji, Igalamela-Odolu, Ofu, Dekina, Ankpa, Olamaboro, Basa and Omala, making up more than 45 per cent of the total registered voters in Kogi.
- Melaye is a former senator from Kogi West. Among the local governments in his area are; Kabba-Bunu, Yagba-West, Yagba-East, Mopa-Muro, Ìjùmú and Lokoja local government Areas.
- There are 239 electoral wards in Kogi with 3,508 polling units. Dekina has the largest concentration of polling units in Kogi, with 352, followed by Ankpa, with 292, and then Okene, with 284 polling units.
