The Nigeria Super Falcons will play England in the Round of 16 of the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Monday, August 7, at 8:30 a.m. Nigerian time for a spot in the quarterfinals.
To secure the top spot of group D, the Lioness of England thrashed China by 6 goals to 1. Lauren James led a revitalised England attack with two goals and three assists, helping the Lionesses secure first place in Group D.
Hemp’s excellent pass in the opening phase and James’s goal with a header set up Russo to score past Zhu Yu for England’s first goal.
Russo’s goal ensured that England became the first team in Women’s World Cup history to score in at least 16 straight games.
After playing to another goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland in their final group B match, the Super Falcons, on the other hand, advanced with five points behind co-host Australia.
Nigeria will continue it’s world cup campaign in Brisbane with the round of 16 fixture against England on Monday.
An outstanding performance in their 3-2 victory against co-host Australia in their second group fixture gave Super Falcons a slot in the round of 16.
