The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, which comprise organised labour, are currently meeting with members of the Presidential Steering Committee on Palliatives at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja less than 48 hours before the planned nationwide strike.
Presentations from the FG’s subcommittees on mass transit, compressed natural gas and cash transfers will be discussed at the meeting on Monday, which got underway at 05:30 p.m.
Asserting that the FG was not prepared for the meeting, organised labour stormed out of a meeting last Friday.
Three subcommittees of mass transit, CNG, and cash transfers, which the government had proposed to lessen the impact of the subsidy removal, were to provide an update at the botched meeting.
Joe Ajaero, the president of the NLC, Festus Osifo, the secretary of the TUC, Nuhu Toro, and other representatives from organised labour, including Prof. Sam Amadi, are present at the meeting. Emma Ugbaja, the general secretary of the NLC.
Among those supporting the FG are the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari, and the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
