In a statement on his official social media handle, former Bayelsa State Governor and ex-President Goodluck Jonathan congratulated Governor Douye Diri on his successful re-election. Jonathan, who expressed his confidence in the electoral process, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prioritize enhancements to the nation’s electoral system.
The former president lauded Governor Diri, emphasizing that the victory was well-earned and reflected the public’s trust in his leadership. In his congratulatory message, Jonathan highlighted Diri’s years of dedication to fostering peace, prosperity, and progress in Bayelsa State.
The statement read, “Congratulations to His Excellency @govdouyediri on his re-election as the Governor of Bayelsa State. Your triumph at the polls is thoroughly deserved, showcasing the people’s unwavering confidence in your leadership and a recognition of your years of commitment to the peace, prosperity, and progress of Bayelsa.”
Recognizing the responsibilities that come with success, Jonathan called upon Governor Diri to reciprocate the trust vested in him by the people. He urged the re-elected governor to work for the collective well-being and advancement of all Bayelsans, transcending political affiliations, senatorial districts, clans, or communities.
The former president also took the opportunity to address the broader electoral landscape, drawing attention to the off-cycle election and its implications. Jonathan appealed to the electoral umpire and other stakeholders to address the pertinent issues arising from such elections and collaborate on improving the overall electoral system for the sustainability of the nation’s democracy.
It is noteworthy that Governor Diri’s victory in the keenly contested election was announced with a narrower margin compared to elections in Kogi and Imo states. Diri secured a total of 175,196 votes, while his main contender, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress, garnered 110,108 votes.
