A former Kaduna Senator, Shehu Sani, has described those protesting against the recently released EU election report as masquerades of the decadence of Nigeria’s democracy.
He said the protesters should have seen the report as a compass that would guide the country to perfect its system.
Making this comment in reaction to the recent protest against the recently released election report by the Coalition of Civil Society Organisation and Political Parties for Good Governance (CCSOPPGG), Mr Shehu in a tweet on Friday described the protest as a hollow and futile noise.
“The protest in front of the EU Embassy in Abuja over the election report is a hollow and futile noises of conscienceless Abuja protest merchants. They are masquerades of the decadence in our country. The EU report is a compass that should guide us to perfect our system,” Mr Sani tweeted.
The demonstrators marched from the Federal Capital Territory’s Central Area to the European Union’s headquarters. They carried multiple placards with various inscriptions.
The group claimed that the report was a threat to the sovereignty of Nigeria.
The EU had earlier criticised the 2023 general elections in a report, citing vote-buying, murder, and other forms of violence as some of the reasons for its criticism.
The peaceful protest came to an end at the EU headquarters, where the group’s leaders spoke to union officials.
With a promise from an EU official to relay the message of the protesters to the Union, the group took their leave.
The Federal Government also rejected the EU’s report on the general elections in 2023 on Sunday, calling the mission’s findings “jaundiced.”
